I was not able to post my blogs mid way of the trip because we ran out internet! One of my husbands relatives commented on how it looked like a internet cafe in our house. Oh well more time for other things. So the weather turned a little cold and rainy the last few days and of course the day we left the sun was shining and it was warm, but a nice send off. I will be going back in a year from now. It's sad to be home, but I guess that is what makes you appreciate a holiday, or getaway. What a great day. Stayed up till 3am and slept till 11am. I don't think I have ever done that, but totally worth it. We spent time with family in S.A and had a braai-barbecue, and then continued to figure out life over wine! Today we did a scouting for product and I can say so far I am very excited with my finds! Back to shop tomorrow and perhaps some spa services and a braai for dinner. Tough life!

Our trip started Saturday Oct 2nd in the evening travelling stand by Air Canada to England. We arrived in London on Sunday morning and stayed at a hotel to recover, with a total of 0 hours of sleep in the plane. Sunday we went to the London Heathrow airport again standby for the flight with British Airways to Cape town South Africa. After trying 2 flights and running between 2 terminal, and if you have been to Heathrow you know this is no easy task, with 3 kids and about 12 bags between 2 families! We finally got on the last flight to go to Johannesburg we were good to go and had about 15min to get through security and get to the gate. My husband, daughter and I should be on video on how security check should be, be organized and know what to do, no "dilly dallying" We ran about 10 foot ball fields with about 6 escalators to get to the gate. We were red, sweaty and exhausted, but made it, unfortunately my brother and sister-in-law have a different story how there evening turned out. We arrived after 11 hours of flight to Johannesburg with again 0 sleep for me to mass disorganization. We spent the day in the airport trying to get to Cape town and I felt like fainting from exhaustion, but we finally got out, and all this chaos made sense when we walked in to Kia Ora. My father-in-law( passed away this summer and why we are coming to South Africa), had a plan and it was to appreciate the energy and pit-falls to get to your pure happiness and what is truly important in life. Take a look at the photos below and see where my heaven is!

Wow it must have been the "sex in a bun" from Pia's this morning that gave such a charge for the day! That's what we've decided to call her melt in your mouth sticky caramel bun. Not to sweet, just right! After a day at work then racing to get my daughter afterschool, then racing home to let the dog out, vacuum, clean my daughters feet, and actually cook a meal! Just pasta and meatballs but betther than my "mish mash" of cheese and crackers and veggies,( I know you are laughing Lori!) Then making chili for the next few cold days at work. I am feeling like I may be getting the "time management thing" down. This was the sign I need to start blogging again.
I wonder if Pia's Bakery will have the same buns tomorrow!!!!LOL

New Fragrance in from Paris by Miller et Bertaux. "for you" Just an amazing unique fragrance. A cedar/sandalwood base, blended with flowers of character(white lily, black iris,ylang ylang), spiced chutney and rosewood oils. When you smell a high quality perfume you can really appreciate the essence. I cannot handle the typical department style perfume anymore. They all smell the same and give me headaches.

All the perfumes I carry in store I personally try and love each one. I don't like anything to heavy, and feel a fragrance should reflect you mood or the mood you wish to be in.

One of the things I love about my job, is testing new products for the shop! I love everything in my shop but the most fun for me is trying new bath and body products. I have been in retail sales and management just under 20 years now and have worked from Toronto to Oakville in clothing, spa, and bath and body. I have also tried several different products from various countries, brands and prices. This why my shop is what it is, a mix of everything I have done and love. I have recently come across a product that I have seen before but forgot about until this week. I have some delicious lip gloss , eye shadow and natural mascara to name just a few coming to test. If you know make-up it seems to be very similar to Stila, but natural. I also have some organic hand cream, bubble bath , body cream from another line I will be trying in the week as well. I will post my feedback after I have played, and let you know if it be making an appearance at Noinkee's!

Winter Driving!

I wanted snow, I got it! I thought today was my last day to live. I was so terrified this morning driving to work in my husbands sport car. I had to pull over at a plaza and wait for him to come and get me. Sorry for anyone driving behind me this morning. So it will be the last time I do that on a snowy day!

" A person is a person no matter how big or small!" Quote from Horton hears a Who! I recently encountered a business man who felt his business was too "classy" for my buyers as he basically put it. Someone made a comment after meeting me that they were surprised to find out how down to earth and friendly I was. They thought with the merchandise I carried I would be a "high maintenance B-I-T-C-H" To me this is crazy. I just love good quality and unique pieces that have a story. It's funny that this this business man felt my pricing and merchandise did not reflect "high end". It takes all kinds but if I don't have to associate myself and expose my customers to such ignorance, I'd rather not.

The search will continue for the perfect little store front. In the meantime my showroom and events will be my thing. I believe everything happens for a reason and Karma will bite him in the ass!

I had a great Open House on June 12th- Mini Mani night with Little Chefs healthy recipes, and Epicure selections with amazing barbecue rubs and sauces. The next one will be fun too. Spring is finally here!

Well it has been a while since I have done an entry. I have tried several times and drawn a blank. I have been inspired by reading my friend's e-mails on her life with 3 kids under the age of 6, 2 being twins. As mothers, wives, and entrepreneurs we sometimes walk through the day like a zombie but somehow we are still able to feed and water the kids, get them to school, clean the house, pay the bills, fill the fridge, answer e-mails, get to sports and still be alive at the end of the day. And I wonder why after 2 sips of wine I am ready for bed!

We can all learn from our kids and there innocence. My daughter loves everyone and wants everyone to love her. She has a schoolmate in school who is not always the nicest to her, so I have been told, but she still continues to try to reach for their freindship . I guess she is being the bigger person. It seems to be that way in business these days. I'm pretty easy going and like to work with other small business'(Little chefs, Pottery Parties in the Hills, Joppa -fair trade coffee) in events and cross promotion. But I really need to say that I'm noticing some business have lost there focus. What do they do? What are they selling? Furniture stores with clothes? Are you a photographer , estitician/hairdresser, and retail shop!? Has everyone let the big "R" word go to there head? Focus people, FOCUS. This is the best time for small business to get out there, but be fare. There is room for everyone, play fare and remember what you are about, don't try to suck every product and service because you are scared. Work together! Perhaps suggest somewhere or someone where they could go for another service or product that is local that maybe you should not take on. I support local competitors and small business. Work as a community and it will benefit everyone. When a business stands alone it is nice, but when there are options and variety in services it is great. It builds a community. Remember why you started your business and what is important to you. What goes around comes around. Be good, be fare and share the success. Be the bigger person!

Todays Kids, Sports and Empowerment

I recently went to speak at a local Highschool, ODSS. It has been a while since I've stepped inside one. Big change, yet still the same. I was asked to help in a mentorship program by a coaching service, The Entrepeneur's Source, that helps individuals explore self-employment options. I actually did not go in to speak of my company but of my past sports experience in gymnastics. I was on the Canadian National Womens Gymnatics team about 18yrs ago, and gave the kids the insight, (hopefully), on what it takes to be an athlete or a coach, or anything they really desire in life. I find it interesting when asked to do things like this because you find that it reminds you where you have been and where you are now, and what you have done to get this point in life, and it gives you your own sense of empowerment when trying to empower others.

As a friend quoted"Fail Often, Fail Fast, Fail Cheap". Jim's CEO Blog-Time Leadership. I like this because if you don't fail, it means you have nothing to learn from, just learn fast or it will cost you!

Oil of Oregeno is not for your eyes!

I am embarrassed to tell this story but it may give someone a good laugh who needs one. I was given this tip by my neighbor and friend as well as at the health food store. When you or your child is sick put oil of oregano oil on the soles of the feet with socks on top at night-time. It helps to detox and help get rid of colds. Weird, but it works! I was in the store last week and was about to buy some and then thought I will save some money today and just break open the oil of oregano tablets and use those,( which are good only for adults to take internally when sick or getting sick). I had my daughter up on the bathroom counter, socks ready to go, go to pop the tablet and instantly felt the panic of blindness and burning. Yes it sprayed my eyes and entire face. Then I panicked that it may have hit my daughter, but heard her laughing thinking this was all very funny. I'm freaking, worried that she is going to fall off the counter and of course not being able to see, knocked half my cosmetics and such of the counter before I got to her. Turned on the tap in the bath tub full tilt and ran it over my face for about 20mins. So the moral of this story is....

Everything happens for a reason. Everything is made for a reason. Don't cheap out, buy the right thing the first time, and end up saving yourself in the long run!

Being a Mompreneur and Keeping Sanity

This is officially my first blog. The last two were done by my husband and a friend. I, with the help of my husband, have started a new on-line e-shop; www.noinkees.com This is my dream job (besides being a mom, and a wife.) I have worked in retail for over 18 years. Why for so long? I love people, shopping and managing. However, it started to get to me that I was taking ownership over the stores I managed yet they were not mine. All the doubts and scary unknowns kept me from starting anything for years, until my husband, who supports me all the way, said "poop or get off the pot!" ...So here I am... I work about 18 hrs a day; laundry, watching my daughter draw, vacuuming up the dog hair, walking the dog, getting the mail/ e-mails, doing errands, making sure the dog, and child have eaten, and maybe have 5 mins of silence until the child and dog are at eachother, but I love all of it.

I have done retail management for years, but when you own it, it's completely different. There is a passion for what you believe in. I had a coffee with a friend today. Yes I sat down and had some mommy time!. I found myself trying to confirm what I was doing was right, but I cannot expect everyone to believe in the same things. People do not change and we cannot expect them to, but we can offer education. For example (given by my friend), you can buy an inexpensive shirt for $7.00 and it may last for a couple of months, and buy another one in another couple of months, and so on and so on. Why wouldn't you buy one for $40.00 that would last for a two years and you end up saving money. So the inexpensive shirt really is not so inexpensive but cheap! Just a thought!

Though the purpose was to launch the website, our shop front in our converted dining/sitting room was set up over the past couple of months, and was a big shopping draw for our guests. Everybody seemed to like the mural from www.muralunique.com , a picture of the entrance to Kyoto Japan Police station.
There seems to be alot of interest in the community for the products we are carrying, and we seem to be getting a steady 20 to 25 hits per day on www.noinkees.com . There is a definite movement on behalf of the consumer to buy smarter, and safer. Products which give back to communities here and in other parts of the world, enviromentally safe products, especially organic clothing, are what many of our guests that day ended up buying.
